Member’s Interests:
- Anthropology/Archaeology; People. Alfred loves people. He likes being around them, seeing them, listening to them.. In his own opinion, though he’d never just say so to anyone, he considers human beings themselves to be the eight world wonder. He’s always been fascinated with people; how they behave, how they work, what makes humans..human. This is part of the reason he tries so hard to make friends with everyone he meets; though he knows its not quite true, and kind of foolish to think so.. There’s always been something in the back of his mind that just nags that he isn’t quite human without some kind of friends or relations of the like. He just never feels quite right with himself unless he’s surrounded by (hopefully) smiling faces..
- Junk Food; His guilty pleasure. Everyone has that one thing that they know is sooo bad for them, but they just can’t help themselves. Though Alfred has quite a few of those vices.. Junk food is by far, his worst one. Chips, Cookies, Donuts, Ice-cream, Soda, Candy..and his worst one of all; Fast Food. Especially burger joints, such as McDonald’s. Though any other kind of fast food will due if there’s not a McDonald’s around; anything from fried chicken (one of his favorites after burgers), to pizza. Because of this, he rarely eats anything thats actually healthy for him..and only gets vegetables on his burgers or pizza. And despite his paranoia with his weight..he can’t really find the will to just give up (or even cut back) on his junk food intake.
- The Harmonica; One thing that has been with Alfred since he was a young boy.. Ever since he first got one, he’s always been interested in it; learning how to play it surprisingly took him quite a while.. But once he got the hang of it, he could never put the instrument down. He loved getting to learn new, more complicated songs on it and playing them for whoever would be willing to take the time to listen to him.. Even in his adulthood, he still has his first harmonica, though he plays a different, newer one in order to keep his precious, original one from breaking one day.
Member’s Strong Points:
- Optimistic; Being a die-hard optimist, Alfred can’t help but always think and hope things will get better. If something’s going wrong, or if someone’s having a bad day, he’ll always do his best to try and cheer them up with his cheesy, optimistic cliches and overall bad jokes. He’s always been full of hope, its one of the things he says life just wouldn’t be the same without; the world just wouldn’t be as bright. No matter how bad a situation gets, he’ll always think it’ll get better somehow.. Rather by someone else or by himself (as in, he gets to play the hero), the situation will always improve. Because thats just how the world works in his eyes; the sun will still always rise like clockwork.
- Intelligent; Despite how those who meet him, almost automatically think he’s nothing but a loudmouth, hyper idiot.. Alfred is actually quite intelligent. And eternally curious. His best subjects have always been the sciences. He was always fascinated with them ever since he was just a child; and that’s what began to launch him through the school ranks like one of the rockets he so loved. He’s very calculating and smart, even if he doesn’t always show it- his mind is always turning, wondering about this, thinking about that, how this might work, what he can do about that. Often, he can come up with solutions and ideas that many others wouldn’t think would work for a particular situation, though they’re always surprised when one of his ideas actually works out. Even though he knew they would from the beginning.
- Physical Strength; If there’s one thing Alfred’s really known for, is his surprising strength. Because of how it seems like no matter how hard he tries, or how much he exercises, he always winds up gaining weight steadily, instead of losing it. What he doesn’t seem to realize, in his panic and worry over his weight, is that aside from the little ‘spare tire‘ around his middle.. All the weight he’s been gaining over the years, is actually his muscle that continues to build with all the frantic exercise he does. Because he literally doesn’t know his own strength, he’s often unknowingly too rough with others.
Member’s Weak Points:
- Childish; Due to how fast he grew up, Alfred never really had much time to just be a child or to enjoy his childhood. Its almost like he went straight from a young boy to an adult, with no time to have fun or express the childish, immature phase that every other person usually gets to during the childhood. Because of this, despite his age and status..He often behaves very childishly and immaturely, regardless of how much others may scold him for it. He can’t help himself really; though he’ll make attempts to be serious when its needed- and while he usually can be- some times a bit of his suppressed childishness will show itself.
- Hero Syndrome; Alfred has a slight bit of the ‘hero syndrome’. He was conditioned to be the perfect little prodigy when he was younger, so as he grew older, he started taking it upon himself to try and do things that would earn his parents appreciation and approval. Or, anyone’s really. Because of this, the word ‘no’ isn’t a big part of his vocabulary. Anything to be the ‘hero’ of a situation. Rather its going out of his way to do a favor for someone who doesn’t even like him.. Taking on an extra workload.. The one who stays late, so others can go home early.. Anything to be needed by someone else. Even if its just being used. Over the years, Alfred has slowly turned himself into a sort of hero; but at a great cost to himself. The stress this causes is sometimes overwhelming, not to mention he’s come to harbor resent in the back of his mind for those he helps. He tries not to think on it, because he knows its terrible to; and its unheroic. So he continues to play the hero for those around him, rather they want him to or not; even though he’s begun to lose sight of what he wants out of life.
- Possessive; Alfred is an extremely possessive person. Especially when it comes to people. While he may get a bit possessive or protective over objects with sentimental values, such as his harmonica; or things that are just extremely necessary; such as his glasses. But when it comes to people.. Considering how he’s never had very many friends- well, hardly anyone close to him at all, really. Once he does become close to someone, he tends to become quite possessive. Though he won’t act like it all the time, he can become very jealous very easily if someone else is getting the attention of someone he thinks to be ‘his’. Rather it be a friend or a loved one. This nature becomes even worse, if Alfred feels like someone he’s close to is going to leave or be taken away, regardless of the situation.. He can become quite forceful and almost frightening in his attempts to prevent such an event. Despite his normally strong morals and sense of justice, nearly nothing is going to far, if it means he’ll get to keep the ones he’s close to and to keep them safe.
- Warped Self-image; He’s nearly obsessed with exercising, even though he can’t bring himself to really stick to a diet. Despite how he’s mostly in shape, aside from his slightly chubby midsection, Alfred often frets over his weight and image.. Thinking himself to be very overweight and out of shape, regardless of what others might say; though they really just tend to agree with this, often with insulting nicknames such as ‘Fatty‘ and ‘Tubs‘ and so forth. Thus; he exercises constantly, unaware that the reason he’s not losing weight- and often gaining some- is because of his building his muscles up, not fat. His mental image of his physical self is so far askew, that he almost never believes any kind of positive comment relating to it, often just brushing it off with a bit of false-ego, though he’ll be mentally pointing out everything that makes it untrue.
Member’s Aspirations:
- ..To be someone’s hero; Not just to be a hero in his own mind, by helping out the people around him with the little things here and there.. But to genuinely be someone’s hero. Not just anyone; but someone’s special enough to make him feel like a real hero without even trying- someone worth so much to him to try and actively get over his syndrome to become a real hero. Even if its just for that one person alone. He wants to be needed by someone who needs just as much, and receive their approval and appreciation and all their love and attention they could possibly give him. In exchange for his own, of course. Regardless of how sappy or corny it may sound, aside from the more childish dream of being a literal superhero (with a cape and such), this is one thing he wants more than anything else. To be someone’s personal hero and be happy in life with that one person.
- To get out of Amenic; Though he was perfectly okay with the project in the beginning.. The longer it continues to go on, the more Alfred’s personal morals continue to feel threatened by his work there. He sometimes worries that if he continues to work there in the project, he’ll gradually lose some of the morals that had been instilled in him as a child. Ones he’d always kept high and carried with him from boyhood up to adulthood. This and the fact that his own privacy is threatened by the cameras of the project.. And the idea he’s been forming in his head of ‘saving‘ the Subjects from this study in some way, have all built up into him wanting to leave the project as soon as possible.
Member’s Fears:
- Ghosts; Though most would never guess from his typical behaviour, Alfred is absolutely terrified of ghosts. He strongly believes in them, despite his love for science; always has and always will. Whenever there’s a seemingly mysterious sound or a peculiar sight out the corner of his eye, its always the first possibility that enters his mind. While he tries to reason his fears and worries away; how could such a thing possibly exist? And even if they did, why would they ever want to bother with him in the first place? His logic rarely wins over his fear. He loves movies and often goes to see horror themed ones.. Though the horror movies scare the life out of him, its even worse if it happens to involve ghosts in the plot line. He’ll never admit it, but such movies have made him cry before.
- Being Lonely; His early childhood was a terribly lonely time for him. There was never anyone around for him, no matter the situation; his needs to survive were met and thensome. However his social and emotional needs were neglected almost entirely, considering his parents were never around except for the bare minimum and his teachers didn’t believe in any kind of chit-chat or socializing with him, aside from teaching him that day’s lessons. Though he still didn’t have much socializing even after he grew up, his loneliness lessened with age and freedom. One of his biggest fears is to wind up becoming as lonely as he was when he was a child.. Which, considering how bad he is at making friends and getting close to others, is a very real possibility for him.
- Becoming Useless; Alfred feels that his only real purpose in the world is help others, no matter what sort of help it may be.. Unless he’s helping someone or doing something for someone, he just never feels like he has any importance to the world. Because of this, he tries his utmost hardest in order to keep being useful and helpful to those around him, even if it means going way out of his way in order to do so. Thus, he’s terrified of becoming useless one day.. If he can’t help anyone, Alfred will feel like he has no purpose or meaning in the world; like he’s a lost cause, just a another waste of space. And this is why he can get so obnoxious and pushy in his efforts to help.. He doesn’t want to lose the one thing that makes him feel like he’s worth even just a little more than the dirt that sticks to his sneakers.
Member’s Behaviour: At a glance, Alfred Jones may seem like an open-book sort of man; the kind that wears his heart on his sleeve. A smile usually on his face, as he can almost always find something of sorts to be happy about. He’s always had an upbeat attitude; he’d say it just ran in his blood, but it’d be quite obvious to those who knew him well, that it didn’t. He remains cheerful, because he’s a die-hard optimist; if something’s wrong, it’ll get better if you just believe it will and smile the gloom away. And it doesn’t take much to put such a smile on his lips; nice weather, a hello from someone who usually ignores him..A toy from a McDonald’s Happy Meal, helping someone out in need. Though some call this a bit too simple-minded, for Alfred its just right. You only live once after all; so why not make the most of it, and enjoy the little things in life while you’re still able to? Though he tries not to dwell on it too much, he’s well aware at how fragile a life and happiness are.. How easily either, or both, could be taken away- this being why he’s such an optimist. He doesn’t see much of a point and wasting the time one has, worrying about needless things and being, quite simply, a buzzkill. While he likes to believe that his smile and cheerfulness is infectious..more often than not, to his grave and obvious disappointment, it seems to be more of something that has made people avoid him.. They say he smiles too much; that his laugh is obnoxious and that its impossible to be so happy and carefree all the time. He’ll do his best to ignore this.. But little do others no, its one of the few things that really gets to him.
The only thing stronger than his optimistic attitude.. Is his borderline obsession with freedom and justice. He’s always had a strong set of morals, even when he was a small boy growing up. As a child, he was overly fascinated by the superheroes in comic books, particularly ones such as Superman, Captain America, Batman and Spiderman.. While he likes the Superman logo more than any of the others, Batman will always be his favorite hero, though he’ll rarely admit to it. He admire him the most for the soul fact that, unlike the other comic book heroes..Bruce Wayne didn’t have any mutant or alien superpowers. To Alfred, its always made him more of a ‘real’ hero than the others, though he adores all of them.. In a way, one could say that Alfred himself, aspires to be a ‘real’ hero like Bruce one day. Though he’ll admit that actually reading about it can get a little boring in large doses..He actually quite enjoys keeping up with the law and politics in his free time. Usually only American politics, however; anything else he tends to just clump together as ‘Other’ or ‘Too Complicated’ or occasionally even ‘Downright Boring’, much to the annoyance of some of his peers.
Always sticking his nose where it doesn’t belong; he’s the type of man who can’t leave bad enough alone. When Alfred’s around, hardly anything can be kept to the person or persons it involves; he’s so damn curious and nosey, he just can’t leave anything alone until he finds out just what’s going on and with who. And why. He’ll try to justify it as that he just wants to make sure everything’s alright; or that he needs the information to become a better hero to the people in question.. Truthfully, though, Alfred just cannot stand being left out. Of anything. Even if it doesn’t concern him at all. He always wants to know whats going on and wants to be kept in the loop; worried that if he’s out of it for even just a moment.. He’ll lose a valuable opportunity to try and make friends with someone who didn’t particularly want to be friends with him before. What he doesn’t seem to realize, however, is that by being so nosey and getting into people’s business.. It often just makes them want even less to do with him and want to avoid becoming close to him even more. No one wants to be friends with someone with a double-standard on privacy. While he always wants to know whats going on in other’s lives.. Alfred rarely lets anyone know about what’s all exactly happening in his. For such a nosey person, Alfred is also a very private one; his business is his business and usually no one else’s. He can pry into yours; but you are not allowed to pry into his without the American becoming over-defensive, a tad paranoid, and downright childish in his attempts to keep his personal privacy. Unfortunately for those around him, though.. He also doesn’t realize how much of a hypocrite this makes him; and when confronted about it, he’ll wind up denying it up and down until the other person gets tired of arguing and gives up.
To the annoyance of everyone that is stuck being around him.. Alfred usually doesn’t bother to assess a situation at all. Reading the atmosphere, sensing the mood, noticing the tension; none of these. Its not that he’s incapable of understanding them.. He simply just finds it boring and a waste of time to try, most times. He’ll try to when a situation is very critical, but only if its absolutely necessary for him to do so in order to ‘save the day’ or save something important to him. Anything else, the blonde tends to deem not worth the time and effort it takes to read the atmosphere of something that isn’t extremely important to Alfred himself. However dull or downright stupid this habit of his might make him seem in the public’s eye.. Alfred is actually extremely intelligent. Quite the child prodigy in all meanings of the term. A regular Einstein. ..Well, if Einstein were a near hyper-active, childish blonde who doesn’t understand that talking with your mouth full of French fries is a very, very terrible and rude habit. Though his brains and book-smarts developed at surprisingly quick pace.. that left quite a bit of a gap between his mental capabilities and his emotional ones. Regardless of how childish his actual personality is, Alfred is still a genius, much to the surprise of others. He loves science above all else and is full of random facts and trivia of the most unusual things that most people probably wouldn’t even take the time to learn. Ask him a question- about nearly anything- and you can bet he’ll have an answer for you.
One of Alfred’s main flaws that always stands out amongst his others, is his eternal concern with his weight. He loves eating and does plenty of it; probably more so than he should. Especially when it comes to sweets and junk food.. They’re his guilty pleasure one could say; he knows they’re bad for one’s health, and that its part of the reason he has troubles with his weight (even if he denies problems with his weight at all), but he just can’t resist them in the least. One could say he’s practically addicted to the stuff. That aside, even though he knows he’s a little overweight- though what he doesn’t know, is that most of it is muscle- he’ll vehemently deny it to all those who comment on it. Occasionally, Alfred will even try to convince himself that there’s absolutely nothing wrong with his weight.. That he’s in top form, at just the right weight and that he’s always been a fit as one can be. As much as he hates to admit, he’s even gotten into little arguments with others over his weight; they’ll say he is overweight and he’ll deny it and bickering will start; all because of his refusal to admit to another person that there’s actually an issue. Though he knows there’s one deep down, some parts of him still don’t want to admit that such a ‘hero’ like himself would ever be ‘pudgy’, ‘chubby’ or ‘fatty’. Aside from this, another noticeable shortcoming of his, Alfred also has no sense of direction. Geography has always been his weakest point; even with all his smarts. Growing up, for the longest time, he always thought people could get from place to place- even to far places across the ocean, like England or China- all by car. He gets lost very easily, even in small neighborhoods; he doesn’t know any place well, because he moved so much as a child and then relocated to Amenic for work. Because of this, he almost always uses a GPS when driving- or even better, has someone else do the driving for him, since he becomes so easily distracted on the road himself.
Regardless of what people may think of the American from his usual demeanor and the air he gives off.. Most of that courage and confidence he displays is usually just bravado. While he can be a very brave soul when it comes to trying to protect others.. He is often scared senseless of the most ridiculous things imaginable; such as ghosts, scary movies and the most surprising phobia of marmite. Though the slogan is “Hate it or love it”, Alfred is nearly terrified of the stuff; often prone to freaking out a bit and trembling in fear all over from just the sight of a jar. In genuinely dangerous or troublesome situations though, he’s one of the most reliable, courageous people one could ever hope to have with them when things get bad. Some of this seemingly comes from his hero complex- the rest from the fact that he can’t stand seeing other people hurt or scared. Even if its a risk to himself, it it can help to improve the situation for someone else who’s in real trouble near him, Alfred won’t hesitate to take such a risk for their sake. Regardless if they’re a complete stranger; or even more peculiar, an enemy of his. This immense, genuine bravery that he gains in the face of danger..Almost always only surfaces if there’s someone ‘weaker’ around him that he feels he must protect. The bravado comes into play mainly, when it concerns himself. The American usually acts so confident in everything he does; like nothing scares him or makes him uncomfortable.. When the truth is, that so many things do scare and unnerve him. Comments about his weight, public affection and any sort of affection beyond a friendly hug towards himself, make him quite uncomfortable; though he’ll deny all of it for the most part. Ghosts, being intimate with someone and being helpless, scare him tremendously. He’ll pretend like none of them phase him though, especially the latter two. Alfred will try to keep up a brave face no matter how uncomfortable or scared he becomes, when it comes to the more serious issues.
Member’s Story: (A brief faux-history of their ‘cover’ life in Amenic. can be as short or as long as you so please, This is the story they will feed the Specimens they encounter)
Member’s History: Once upon a time, in a small hospital in Georgetown, a young, inexperienced couple became the not-so-proud parents of a healthy, slightly over plump baby boy. While they weren’t sure how they could raise a baby in their own young age; his mother Annie Weller who was just 17 and his father Edmund Jones who was 19; they decided to keep Alfred anyway, rather than giving him up for adoption as suggested by their families. It wasn’t that the two families didn’t want the child to stay with them.. They just knew how his parents were; that they wouldn’t take care of and love him like they should. Sure enough, within a few months after he was born, his parents took up their teenage lifestyle once more- often leaving baby Alfred in the care of poorly judged nannies or, the better choice, his maternal grandmother. From that moment on, he never saw much of his parents..once he started to talk, it was his grandmother; Janneke Olthoff, that he began to call his mama.
And start to talk he did. He was quite the loud child, beginning to repeat words he’d learned from his grandmother around five months. He wasn’t just babbling either; though it took a little time for him to get a word out, it was always something far beyond what he should be capable of at such an early stage of development. By the time he was a little over a year old, he was already speaking small, choppy sentences. Not extremely complex in thought, but full of observation and wonder- and still far more advanced than any other child his age. Naturally, this amazed and baffled his grandmother, who began to feed this ability to the best of her own, teaching him some words in other languages that she knew and started giving him books, curious if he could read as well. A bit to her disappointment, he could not, though he seemed to be overly intrigued with the print on the pages..
By seventeen months, however, he was reading his grandmother bedtime stories, much to her amusement. Though she wasn’t particularly well off, once she revealed her little genius’s abilities to a few other members of the two families, Janneke was able to begin hiring tutors for the boy unbeknownst to his parents. While they were mostly Dutch instructors; she was hellbent on getting him to learn one of his heritage languages; after spending some time with Alfred, they were astonished as well.. By the time he was three, he could now speak perfect English and Dutch. It was at this point that Annie and Edmund began to notice Alfred and the oddity about him.. After a fight with Janneke over how the boy was to be raised, Alfred’s parents move him far up to New York; determined to raise their son as they wanted, not how Janneke had been. This was easily the worst turn of events for Alfred..
Once far away from his beloved grandmother, Alfred Jones became steeped in loneliness. His parents continued with their partying, sort-of college-like lifestyle, as if they didn’t have a child sitting in the hallway, waiting for his parents to finally walk back through the door to see him. Only differences between how they had been in Georgetown and how they were in New York? The first being that they figured if he was ‘so damn smart‘ then he could take care of himself. They didn’t hire any nannies or babysitters for him while they were out. The second being.. That now, Alfred was aware enough to actually feel the loneliness..the missing his mommy and daddy..the wondering why they didn’t want to be around him..the wondering why he had to take care of them when they came home and passed out after drinking and partying all night.. And simply put; Alfred didn’t like these feelings and thoughts. They hurt and scared him, and for all his brains, he couldn’t quite figure out why.
Wasn’t everyone’s family like this?
The one good thing they did do for him however, was enroll him in school. Three and a half years old and in kindergarten, Alfred began to get a lot of attention from his teachers and principal.. Eventually they contacted his parents and set up a meeting about him. Though it took some convincing with his stubborn parents, they finally agreed to begin giving him the best of the best of private tutors. Math, Science, other languages, art; all of it in sanctioned hours with disconnected teachers from dawn til dusk. There was no recess. He had his meals while the lessons continued. His parents stayed away even more now; figuring he had the tutors, what more did he need? They were busy people, no time for a kid.
With the tutors, Alfred’s mental capabilities began to expand even more, cultivated by their teachings. When he was six years old, he began to realize; though media; that his family was not normal.. Most children his age had their parents around nearly constantly. They didn’t have to take care of themselves all alone. And the certainly didn’t have such many teachers for so many things. And these realizations..only fed that growing loneliness in him even more. It was then that he began to willingly put all his focus into his studies.. Specifically languages; as well as a surprising interest in things like philosophy and anthropology. By age seven, he now knew Italian, French, Spanish and some Mandarin, in addition to the English and Dutch he’d been raised with.
From there, his tutors soon ran out of things left to teach him, gradually becoming incompetent in their job when it came to Alfred; he’d flown through middle and high school in a few years. And so, they recommended he begin university.. Even though he was still just nine. His parents were, once more, reluctant. Though upon hearing that everything Alfred could ever need while there, including tuition, would be covered by multiple scholarships and grants simply because of how rare his case was; they instantly agreed. He was shipped off a few days later to New York University. After what seemed like months of trying to decide, Alfred finally settled on going for a degree in Socio-Cultural Anthropology.
